Brave Scots
William Wallace
Wallace lived in medieval Scotland. It was a time when Scotland and England were separate countries, with their own laws, their own armies and even their own kings. In 1286 the Scottish King, Alexander III, managed to fall over a cliff and get himself killed.
The new Scottish ruler ended up being a bit of a weakling, and the King of England, Edward I, decided to take advantage and invade Scotland. He soon controlled most of the country, but one Brave Scot wasn't very happy - his name was William Wallace.
Wallace was pretty annoyed with the whole 'King-of-England-invading-Scotland' thing and decided to do something about it. He gathered together an army of big angry Scottish warriors and set about trying to send Edward I back home to England.
Robert Bruce
Robert Bruce was Scottish, but he grew up in medieval England and was raised as an English knight. His family owned lands in England and Scotland and when the English king, Edward I, invaded Scotland he was loyal to him. However, Bruce soon decided that he must help his Scottish countryman and turned against the English king.
Robert Bruce raised an army and set about trying to defeat Edward I. The problem was that things didn't go too well for the hero. He was badly beaten by the English army and only just escaped with his life.
Modern Heroes
I recently completed a set of books called Modern Heroes for a Scottish publishing company. These are short biographies of famous people. The idea is to give readers positive role models, which show that even though many of these heroes lived difficult lives, they still managed to reach great heights of success.
The range includes:
